How to use this winter crossword

Not every class celebrates the same holidays, and winter break is only part of the season. This puzzle sticks to weather, animals and cold-day life, so it fits January just as well as December. A few clues sneak in science, like the solstice and hibernation, which makes it a handy follow-up to a seasons lesson.

  1. Check the clue list and change anything you like, one answer and clue per line.
  2. Add a word or two from your own unit. If a new answer cannot cross the others, the page says so instead of dropping it.
  3. Switch the letter counts off under More options if you want the puzzle a little harder.
  4. Print the puzzle and the answer key, or save them as a PDF for a sub plan.

Tips

  • Keep a stack in the sub folder: it needs no explanation beyond the instructions line.
  • Ask students to pick three answers and write a sentence with each on the back.
  • Indoor recess on a snowy day is the perfect time to solve it on the classroom screen together.
