How to use this states & capitals crossword

Memorizing capitals is a classic fourth and fifth grade task, and a crossword turns the drill into a puzzle. The crossings help: a student who knows Boston and Denver gets letters toward Sacramento. This list mixes famous capitals with ones students often mix up, such as Albany for New York and Dover for Delaware.

  1. Keep the 20 sample states or swap in the region your class is studying, as "capital: Capital of state".
  2. You can flip it, too: write the capital as the clue and the state as the answer.
  3. Multi-word capitals like Salt Lake City work; the clue shows the letter counts for each word.
  4. Print the puzzle and answer key, or save them as a PDF for review homework.

Tips

  • Make five puzzles of ten states each by region, so all 50 are covered over a week or two.
  • Keep a US map on the wall during the first round, then take it down for the second.
  • Students who finish early can write a clue that is not the state name, like a famous landmark.
  • States and capitals bingo on BingoSheet uses the same idea for a whole-class review game.
