How to use this vocabulary crossword

A crossword is one of the best vocabulary reviews because the clue is the definition: students have to recall the word, then spell it correctly to make the crossings work. That double check is hard to get from a matching worksheet. Paste the list from your reading program or a spreadsheet; a tab between word and definition works just like a colon.

  1. Delete the sample list and paste yours as "word: definition", one per line. Copying two columns from a spreadsheet also works.
  2. Up to 20 words fit in a free puzzle. Extra lines are listed under the box, never silently dropped.
  3. Leave the word bank off for a test of recall, or turn it on to focus on spelling and meaning.
  4. Print both pages: the puzzle and an answer key with every answer next to its clue.

Tips

  • Use the same list all week: Monday as a word search, Wednesday as bingo, Friday as this crossword.
  • Short, student-friendly definitions make better clues than dictionary entries.
  • If a word shares no letters with the others, the page tells you. Swap it or add one more word.
  • Copy the share link into your lesson plan so a co-teacher prints the identical puzzle.
