How to use this sight words crossword
Crosswords help beginning readers notice the letters inside a word, which is exactly what sight words need. These clues are short sentences with a blank, colors and numbers, so most children can solve them with a little support. The Dolch words come from the pre-primer and primer lists. Turn on the word bank under More options for kindergarten so children copy each word letter by letter.
- Turn on the word bank under More options: early readers find the answer in the bank and copy it into the squares.
- Change the words to your class list. Sentence clues with a blank (___) work best for this age.
- Short answers make a smaller grid, so the squares print large enough for young hands.
- Print it, or solve it together on the classroom screen by tapping a square and typing.
Tips
- Read each clue aloud the first time, then let children try the next one on their own.
- Color-word clues are a gentle start: blue, red and yellow are easy to picture.
- Send it home with the answer key for families to check together.
