How to use this science crossword
Science units bring a lot of new words at once, and a crossword makes students retrieve each one from its meaning. This list covers terms that come up across third to sixth grade: the water cycle, matter and mass, food chains, rocks and fossils, and the scientific method. Swap in the words from your current unit and the grid rebuilds around them.
- Keep the 20 sample terms or replace them with your unit list, one "term: definition" per line.
- Long words like photosynthesis are fine; grids here grow up to 21 squares wide.
- Use the preview to make sure the clues read clearly before you print a class set.
- Print the puzzle and answer key, or save both pages as a PDF.
Tips
- Give it as a pre-test: students circle the clues they could not answer, and those become the focus.
- Split the list by topic (water cycle, rocks, energy) for shorter puzzles across a unit.
- Turn on the word bank for students who need support with spelling technical terms.
